Andrea- Haiku

We were learning about Haiku's. Haiku's are Japanese Traditional Poems. There are three lines in a Haiku Poem. They also have rules. 1. They must have 17 syllables (5,7,5)
                                           2.  It has to be a seasonal reference
                                           3. It has to have a cutting point in the first or second line. (-,.!?)
I was in a group and we created our own Haiku.

Andrea- Estimation: Chains

Length of Chains

WALT: 1. Arrange length in order.
2. Find mean, median, mode, range.
3. Explain the differences in length.

Pairs
Length of Chain in centimeters
Ben and Dion
86
Wesley and Koliata
169
Lorenzo and Liam
170
Ifa and Tane
192
Alyssa and Shanelle
192
Andrea and Lana
200
Ketura  and Serena
220
Stephanie and Cherish
286
Petuana and Yazmin
304
Munokoa and Samuel
320
Viliami and Howard
383

Mean = 229.3
Median = 200
Mode = 192
Range = 297

I think the lengths are different because of the strategy we used for cutting the paper. Some of them cut it from the length and others chose to cut from the width. Viliami and Howard probably made the longest chain because they took the time to measure and cut their strips evenly. Ben and Dion one was short because their strips of paper were big and used up most of the paper.

Andrea- Black Piranha: Descriptive Writing

The Black Piranha
WALT: write a descriptive paragraph.

My father (Carlos Fitarez) has many interests in different animals, mammals, etc. It started when he was a little boy. He read a lot of books about animals which motivated him to find other facts about these species. During one of his, so called, journeys, a friend of his was telling my father about a different kind of fish he’d never heard of before. Carlos did his research before he left for adventure.

Carlos was floating through one of South America’s rivers as he was told that this is where the black piranhas were located. He grabbed out his fishing rod and put his bait on the hook and waited for a black piranha to eat the bait.
        Finally he caught one. As soon as it was in his hands, he grabbed his camera and described nearly everything about the black piranha;

The Black Piranha is a very distinctive species. They have burning red eyes with a stocky body. They’re very dark in colour and have a superb set of gnashes. Almost bulldog like in appearance. It isn’t a long type of fish. It is maneuverable which means it move incredibly quickly. It does not hunt in packs as traditionally believed, they actually hunt on their own.  Because they’re fast and have one of the sharpest teeth on earth, it makes it easy for them to hunt. Piranhas have tatty tails and fins because their cannibalistic. They are not afraid to eat their own kind. They would take big chunks out of the piranha, leaving the fish alive.

As soon as he finished recording it, he let the piranha go and then uploaded the video to youtube and got over 500k views in a week.

Andrea - Role Model

WALT: Write a topic sentence and related facts.

Role Models

A role model is someone you aspire to or are interested in what they do. They would be the person I would like to be. In other words, a role model is a person who inspires me to follow my dreams and set good goals for my future.

The person I look up to in my family is my dad. Although we’re not a rich family, I enjoy good  food, clothes on my back and shoes on my feet. My dad is committed to hard work and enjoys providing for our family. He works five days a week and spends time with us during the weekends. He’s a fun loving dad, who would help anyone, provided he can do so safely.

Another role model would be Yazmin because she is intelligent, kind, she is always on task and is devoted to hardwork. She has a few talents like drawing, being a team player and helping me out when I ask for help. She behaves well in class and is easy to start a conversation with.

My role model in the community is Manu Bennett. He is a famous NZ actor who I look up to because I enjoyed watching “The Arrow” in which he stars in and I’ve always dreamt of being an actress since I was a little girl. Manu Bennett acts as a villain on the TV series and his acting skills made the programme very exciting.

I believe I have chosen a group of strong willed people as my role models and would like to think that I will one day meet Manu Bennett.

Andrea_ Best Weekend

WALT: write a recount with focus on “expensive” words.

WAITANGI DAY
Earlier this month, my family was fussing about getting ready to go somewhere. It was a Friday morning and there was no school. My sister and I stayed home to look after my baby brother because the others were gone shopping for clothes. They came back and they bought my sister and I polkadotted dresses. We put them on and it fitted perfectly. Finally we were all ready and took both of our cars.

We appeared at my nans place and waited for them to get ready. I was bored during the wait. Then my mum spoke, “Hop in the car, we’re going now.” Not everyone could fit so we had to take 3 cars. A few moments later, we came to a place called the Alfriston Botanic Gardens. The car that I was in arrived first, so we had to wait patiently in the car for the rest to come. I asked why we were there and my mum said “we’re just going to take photos. Time went by and the rest of the family showed up. In the front of the building, there was an immense sculpture.

Next to the sculpture was a bewildering waterfront. We took a photo there. We had a proper camera but my brother left it back at home so my aunty used her phone. On the right side, there were 2 boats filled with dazzling flowers. All the boys took photos there. Then we went exploring to the back of the building. There were Sunflowers, Cactuses and plenty more. There was also a tree called a dragon tree. I was astonished because I learned something new. It clicked to me why it was called a dragon tree. It’s because their leaves are as sharp as a dragons teeth.

We came to a bridge where there were ducks in the background, we thought it would be an spectacular place to take a few photos. After a few snaps, we kept on moving.

Soon afterwards, we came to an area called the childrens garden. I took photos with my brother in an egg-shell. We came to a place where there was a towering, straw house. We also took photos there. Beside the straw house, there was a pocket sized pond full of tadpoles. We went to a desert-like place and took photos near plenty of cactuses. There was a maze in the childrens area as well.

There were 2 huge maori statues and there was a maori book written only in maori. We took photos there too. On our way back to the cars, it was pouring. But luckily, it wasn't heavy. We scurried to the cars. As the cars were leaving, a lady asked us if we could help her start her car. So my mum used her jumper leads to start their car. She thanked us and then we were on our way back to my nans house. Stayed there till sundown and we went back home. As a first timer, it was an extraordinary experience.

Andrea- Rap : Chinese New Year

WALT: write a rap

During the Chinese New Year
You’ll see people dancing.
When they were finished
People would say that it was enchanting.

Outside of their house
There are decorations.
But you will never see them
Outside of train stations.

On those decorations
There would be rhymes and poems
People would read them
But obviously not golems.

During the night
They light off firecrackers
Watch out parents
Hide your daughters.

The Chinese New Year
Is a religious festivals
They celebrate the years
Using symbols of animals.

Andrea- Making a Pyramid

triangular prism.jpg

This is the pyramid that I made. I used a compass to connect the lines together to form a triangle. This was a little difficult for me because I struggled using a compass because I hadn't used it before so I had help from my teacher. I would like to learn more about nets.

Andrea Book Choices for Children

Grumpy Elelphant.jpg

I chose to read the book “Grumpy Elephant” by Joy Cowley. It is about a Grumpy Elephant and the other animals make him laugh because they are all bumping into things. I think this is suitable for Juniors because it is a short story but it is also entertaining and funny and it is also extremely easy to read. I think the photos in this story would help them to understand the story and help them with the hard words. I also think that they should be able to read it by themselves because it has plenty of easy words. I am 100% positive that plenty of children would read this story because it is very interesting how the other animals make the Grumpy Elephant happy.

Andrea Soccer Skills

Quan is demonstrating how to stop the ball from getting into the goal. I found it interesting that people can stop a soccer ball with all sorts of parts of their bodies. He is teaching us the technique of how to kick a soccer ball the correct way. I had plenty of fun learning soccer skills with Quan.

Andrea Teeth Poem

Screenshot 2014-05-14 at 2.29.42 PM.png
The nerves in my teeth
Sends messages to my brain
Like when my tooth comes out
I can feel a little pain.

The gum protects my teeth
And my jaw bone
When I took a tooth out
Another had grown.

The bone provides a socket
For the root of the tooth
I am not lying
I’m surely telling the truth.

The root holds the teeth
Inside my jaw
Then I went to the bank
and asked for a withdraw.

The enamel is the part
that everyone sees daily
I felt like playing an instrument
So I chose the ukulele.

Andrea Race Relations Day Celebrations

Everyone was dressed into their cultural costumes. The Samoans strolled onto the stage while their national anthem was playing.
